Decoding Leadership

Smiti Shakya | May 4, 2024

It’s crucial to distinguish between two often-confused terms: Bosses and Leaders. In essence, Bosses manage their employees, while Leaders inspire and guide their team towards shared goals. As the saying goes, “ A Leader cooperates; a boss commands.” This understanding forms the foundation of our discussion on effective leadership in the corporate world.

Today’s corporate landscape presents new challenges, often stemming from managers’ adherence to traditional management tasks: planning, arranging, staffing, leading, and overseeing. However, the world is evolving rapidly, and so must our approach to work and coordination. Can you make this easier to adapt and simplify? Yes, with a change in perspective and an eagerness to adapt to the ever-growing corporate dynamics.

Leaders as Decision-Makers

Many managers in organizations tend to believe that they are the smartest ones to make all decisions by themselves. However, only the best managers or leaders believe in surrounding themselves with a group of peers from the firm to gain insights about the errors and solutions.

Leaders as the Cornerstones to Break New Grounds

To face the challenges; leaders need to adopt a diverse set of thinking styles. They should choose to be more innovative rather than repetitive. Always remember that you can innovate throughout, not just for a limited time. As a manager, it’s not enough to only solve problems occurring at work; you need to challenge yourself to operate the company in a better way. Having that said, it should be more than challenging yourself and others to find new and better ways to grow.

Leaders as Entrepreneurs

Leaders must think of themselves as entrepreneurs, which helps them see themselves widely regarding the things they overlook. Following this action helps them expand their understanding and allows them to act even more efficiently.

As we discuss decoding leadership, let’s examine the position from the perspective of the new generation.

Is GenZ’s working style the same as that of Millenials? Does working style directly relate to leaders or leadership positions? YES.

People often perceive millennials as individuals who actively collaborate and possess a mindset geared towards collaboration. They are happy to work in groups, generate ideas with their colleagues, and guide and learn from each other. On the other hand, the preference of GenZ is to work independently. They do not rely on others for their success and achieving their goals. Therefore, they place a great deal of faith in a leadership style that is based on trust. They believe that they should work in an environment that aligns with their personal values, allowing them to make a positive impact on the world. Socially conscious workplaces that prioritize work-life balance are highly preferred by GenZ individuals. They believe in fighting for their principles to bring about change, which I agree with, even though I belong to the millennial generation.

Leadership is undergoing a transformation. The traditional notion of a leader who commands and controls is giving way to a more collaborative and inclusive approach. Leaders should actively cooperate with their employees, valuing their ideas and contributions as positive organizational engagements. This shift in leadership style offers new hope for employees, paving the way for a more efficient and innovative work environment where problems are solved collectively, and new ideas are nurtured.
