S.H. | May 4, 2024

In the field of human resources (HR), especially in Nepal, traditional gender stereotypes have often hindered the progress of intellectually capable women. However, the tide is turning as more women break through these barriers, challenging conventions and creating a path for greater gender equality in the workplace.

Let us read through this article to explore the experience of a woman in HR who defied stereotypes to become an influential leader, drive positive change, and empower others along the way.

Breaking the Stereotype

As an HR professional who has been in the field for half a decade, I would like to recall my early days in the field when, as a woman, I faced skepticism and doubt. Despite possessing the skills, qualifications and capabilities, I often found people overlooking me for leadership positions. However, I persisted in demonstrating my capabilities through diligent work and strategic thinking, refusing to be discouraged. Eventually, my perseverance paid off, and I ascended to a leadership role, challenging the notion that HR leadership or leadership in general was exclusively a male domain.

Other women have found hope and inspiration in my journey as an HR leader, which has been characterized by resilience and determination. I have always seen resistance from my colleagues or seniors as a stepping stone, a chance to prove the power of ‘Women in HR’. I have never shied away from challenging projects, confirming my competence and dedication every step of the way. Through my exemplary performance and leadership skills, I have inspired a handful of extraordinary women and continue to hold the ambition to uplift and empower many more aspiring ‘Women in HR’.

The Ripple Effect

Empowering and uplifting others has always been my motto. I believe that there is no stronger weapon than empowerment to break free from gender stereotypes. I actively mentor aspiring female professionals and provide guidance, support, and encouragement when needed. By sharing experiences and offering valuable insights, I help cultivate a new generation of confident and capable HR leaders unafraid to challenge the status quo.

The Path Forward: Creating Inclusive Work Environments

Organizations have made much progress in breaking gender stereotypes in HR leadership, but there is still much work to do. They must prioritize diversity and inclusivity initiatives, ensuring all employees have equal prospects regardless of gender. Further, organizations can unlock the different paradigms of talents within their workforce and achieve increased innovation and overall growth by fostering inclusive work environments where they judge individuals on merit rather than gender biases.

Thus, the above-shared experiences of a Woman HR leader serve as a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and determination to stick to the personal vision and break the existing stereotypes. The unwavering commitments and leadership have transformed my career trajectory and paved a path for greater gender equality in the workplace.

As we celebrate these achievements, let us also recognise the importance of continued efforts to empower women in HR and create an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
